A guide to getting you through winter in the dunes!

SPONSORED BY:

Winter is here, there’s no doubt about that, but don’t despair — we’ve got lots of fun things for you to do until the warmer weather returns. Take a look at these eight fun winter activities and where to do them.

Hiking: Getting out on the trails in any season warms your body and your soul. All the trails are open throughout the winter months and when there is not enough snow to do some of the other activities, you can still get out and enjoy the dunes. Be sure to take a walk to the beach to see the shelf ice. But, don’t go out on it. It’s extremely dangerous and should only be viewed from a distance.

Sledding: Although sledding on many of the dunes is not allowed, there are a few where you can have some fun. Devil’s Slide at the Indiana Dunes State Park is a great one or you can head into Michigan and go to Warren Dunes. There is also a hill at Rogers Lakewood in Valpo as well as Forest Park Golf Course.

Cross-Country Skiing: If you have your own skis there are many trails in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Glenwood Dunes trail between Hwy 12 and 20 is one of the best. You can also rent skis at the Douglas Center in Miller and ski along Miller Woods. One of our favorites is Love Creek in Berrien Springs. You can rent skis there and go on some great paths. Across the way is the Madeleine Bertrand County Park where you can rent as well as enjoy night skiing several times throughout the winter. Stoney Run County Park in Leroy Indiana has rentals available and some intermediate and advanced trails.

Ice Skating: One of the most popular spots to ice skate is Central Park Plaza in Valpo. You can also take lessons there! , There are also rentals at Deep River Water Park in Merrillville.

Snow Shoeing: The Indiana Dunes State Park has snow shoe rentals. Head out to the trails for a great walk in the snow and some wonderful exercise.

Fat Tire Bikes: Love Creek rents out fat tires bikes for $15 hour. There are designated trails available.

Tobogganing: You can find toboggan runs at Pokagon, located near Angola, Indiana. Check website for details as it is only open on certain days. Or, lots of winter fun with tubing and tobogganing at Echo Valley in Kankakee, MI

Ice Fishing: Fox Memorial Park in Michigan, and Soldiers Park and Pine Lake in LaPorte are some great spots to do some winter fishing.
