Upon arrival to Deep River County Park in Hobart, the first thing that will catch your eye is the Grist Mill. The Wood’s Family built the mill in 1876 and corn is still ground into meal there today (you can pick some up at the visitors center). Take a tour of the mill then head on over to Grinders Field to see the Saw Mill replica built in the 1990’s. On weekends from May to October, the Deep River Grinders play baseball at Grinders Field by the original baseball rules of 1858 in vintage attire. After leaving Grinders Field, cross over the bridge to explore the trails. The trails are wooded and well maintained, with some hilly along the river. The only con was that there weren’t many trail markers to help guide you on your exploration. A few times the trail being traveled narrowed and disappeared which led to a lot of back tracking, but overall a lot of fun exploring. Also, be advised that some of the trails are equestrian trails so hikers beware of where you step!
There is a designated canoe launch at the park on the northwest side of Old Lincoln Way Bridge. Whether you are looking to explore some new trails, get a history lesson, paddle the river or just take a break and read a book on one of the many benches throughout the park, there’s something for everyone at Deep River.
