Meet Simon Barrios! Simon is a sommelier and bon vivant. A native of Gary, he currently lives in Valparaiso and works for Southern Glazers Wine and Spirits.
What brought you to the dunes? I lived in Gary from the time I was 6 and always loved the dunes!
How long have you lived here? Since 1978
What is your favorite thing to do in the area? We have great breweries, I love hunting for vinyl and finding a great taco or hot dog.
Tell us a secret about the dunes. Many people believe there are vortexes in them.
Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!)
a) Birria (goat slow cooked with spices) at Birria Estilo Ocotlan in Hammond. Yum! I crave it. The consomme is amazing. b) Cheese Koney Dogs at Koney King in Gary. (See Simon in this video at Koney King, right here!) c) Cowles Bog is an amazing hike!
What would you like to teach people about the dunes? I think its important to utilize this amazing resource. What a great place to meditiate and enjoy some fresh air.
Anything else? I am constantly amazed at the richness of the NWI culture. It’s here, you just have to look for it. I have lately been rediscovering Hammond.
