Meet Stephanie Gordon! Stephanie has a Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine, is a licensed acupuncturist and also holds a Bachelors in Nutrition. She is a Beverly Shores resident and a business owner of holistic wellness center, Sacred Dunes Alternative Health in Michigan City. She is a mother of one 1st grader and has become extremely dedicated to Lake Michigan, The Indiana Dunes and Uptown Arts District in Michigan City.
What brought you to the dunes? I was born in Chicago and raised in Aurora, Illinois. Even though my parents are very worldly and cultured we never visited the Indiana Dunes. When I was in grad school I moved in with a friend that lived in Valpo and found myself hiking the trails and regularly and quickly found myself loving the beach bum lifestyle! I truly fell in love with the serene uniqueness of the Indiana Dunes, hence the name of my business Sacred Dunes!
How long have you lived here? I have lived in Indiana for almost 4 years now and truly in the Dunes in my Beverly Shores “tree house” for a little over a year. I love hearing the waves crashing from my bedroom window.
What is your favorite thing to do in the area? My favorite thing to do in the area is hike Paradise Valley near Kemil Beach, bike in Beverly Shores and enjoy all of the food, art and music in the Uptown Arts District in Michigan City.
Tell us a secret about the dunes. A secret about the Dunes…. hmm…. We have prickly pear cactus! I found this out once in an interesting way. I had been hiking Paradise valley out exploring the dunes hadn’t seen another person for ours. As the dainty lady that I am (lol) I went to relieve myself and was nearly pricked in the rear by what I was so surprised to see a prickly pair cactus. The flower in my logo is actually the prickly pair flower. I think of it as an alternative plant for the area and since I practice “alternative” medicine I found it appropriate. Also, the prickers remind me of nature’s acupuncture needles.
Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!)
1- Kemil Beach hole in the fence…..
2- International Friendship Gardens
3- Beverly Shores hike to Mount Baldy
What would you like to teach people about the dunes? I want people to know how unique the landscape is. It is breathtaking and something you have never seen… if you have not been to the dunes that is. I want them to know how wonderful it is to swim in our unsalted sea in the summertime.
Anything else? I would love people to know how much I have fallen in love with Michigan City. I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the MC Rotary Club. I am directing and organizing the Uptown Arts District Merchants Association and on the welcoming committee for Lakefront Career Network. I am excited to be a part of the revitalization of the Uptown Arts District. I want to see our edgy culture thrive! Our new brand here in MC is CREATE. PLAY. REPEAT for any young people in the creative fields that are interested in making this their home and place of work please feel free to reach out to me as a contact in getting you here and comfortably situated!
