Take a ride on the new Singing Sands trail.

Submitted by Laura Niemiec Map Source: Greenways & Blueways Northwest Indiana

The first phase of the Singing Sands Trail is well underway in Michigan City. This paved segment begins where the Calumet Trail ends at Hwy 12 near County Line Rd and winds east into Michigan City to Liberty Trail. Total length is 4.2 miles with future phases expanding that distance. Dig the Dunes Ambassadors explored this new section of the Marquette Greenway, the multi-state trail that will eventually connect Chicago with southwest Michigan. Our ambassadors started at the Great Marsh Trail in Beverly Shores and followed it into Michigan City and back.

Once crossing over Hwy 12, the new Singing Sands Trail slices inconspicuously parallel to the railroad tracks on one side and a view of marshland on the other that reminds you that even though you are heading towards the city, you are still very much in Dune Country. Approaching Nipsco, it crosses over Hwy 12 and gets up close and personal with the infamous cooling tower. This section is great for a photo op as the sun sinks lower in the sky and lights the tower up from behind.

At the present, construction is up to the railroad tracks by outlet mall but with existing bike lanes, you can ride to Liberty Trail or follow the bike lanes towards the beach and take a break on the shore before continuing on or heading back.

(Biking to a destination is always fun! Start in Beverly Shores, head to MC and sit on the patio at Fish Camp or Base Camp, stop at Fluid, shop at Beef Jerky Outlet, or go to many other spots — and receive 10% off with your Dunie card!)
