The guy up top at Sunset Grille

Things are looking up at Sunset Grille in Michigan City IN, and a lot of that has to do with the new guy up top, Chris Van Schoyck. Chris is ruling the roost on the rooftop, making sure that the drinks are flowing, the food is coming out quickly and that customers are enjoying their time at what really is the best view in town.

“It’s not fancy” he said, “It’s basically a concession with a three way liquor license and a beautiful view.”

And that’s true. You can find burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders and pizza on the menu. The building is just not set up for fine dining. However, for those wanting a little bit more they added shrimp cocktail, ahi tuna, a cheese and cracker platter and a few more upscale items.

“We are perfect for people stepping off the beach” said Chris “before you get in the car, get the kids fed and watch the sunset. It really is amazing.”

Chris worked at Blue Chip for 8 years and then managed the bar at Casey’s for three years. He has a lot of experience, a great following and wants to make sure the concessions downstairs can collaborate with the bar upstairs and continue to get everything to run smoothly. Domestics are available, but it’s important for Chris to support local. There is currently Burn ‘Em and Zorn on tap as well as other craft beers and 4 varieties of Shady Creek wine. Yes, wine on tap. They are excited to exclusively carry Shady Creek and have it pour straight from the tap. What does that mean to you? That your wine is always fresh and delicious! There are also fun summer cocktails that are expanding throughout the summer.

Chris plans to continue the popular Thursday night social hour with beer samples all summer. He also wants to add some more live music. His favorite part about the job is watching the rooftop fill up at night and come alive.

“This is what it’s all about” he says with a smile, as he gazes over the bar and across the chairs and couches filled with people enjoying cocktails and watching the gorgeous glow of the just fallen sun. “This is how it’s supposed to be.”
