Days are getting longer, the sun is getting brighter and Dig the Dunes Trail Stop is opening for the season. That's a sure sign that summer is on it's way.
Dig the Dunes Trail Stop, located at 1000 Riverwalk Drive in Portage, IN (Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk), is the only outdoor cafe that serves beer & wine within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park. Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan, Trail Stop offers food & beverage, as well as a large variety of dunes merchandise and souvenirs. It's also one of the best spots in the area to catch a sunset.
The cafe and shop will be open weekends only throughout the month of May (although be sure to check facebook for pop-ups if the weather is nice). The real season will start Memorial Weekend with a summer kick-off party.
Trail Stop will have music on Thursday evenings and late Sunday afternoons. A full schedule can be found here. There will also be several events throughout the summer including the popular Leroy's at the Lake and Fourth Friday beer & wine tastings. The first event of the season, "Tie-Dye Day" will take place on May 15. The Bart Attacks will be out that afternoon to play some tunes and you can pre-order Dig the Dunes shirts to tie-dye, or just stop by and see if your size is available. (More info here).
Known for carrying lots of local brews and food, Trail Stop will continue to have beer and wine from local breweries like Chesterton Brewery, Burn 'Em and 18th Street. They will also have Valpo Velvet Ice Cream bars and a variety of items from Arturos bakery (including the popular pretzels). A few new items will be on the menu this year including fresh flatbreads on Fridays and made to order guacamole on Tuesdays.
Hours will be as follows:
May 1 - May 22 - (weekends only) 1-sunset
May 27- June 12 - Wednesday & Thursday; 3-sunset, Friday-Sunday; noon - sunset
June 14 - August 21 - Open every day except Monday; noon - sunset
